IGNITE stands for Inspiring Growth in the Next Innovators of Technology and Engineering. We launched this virtual initiative as a joint effort with South African FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team Texpand #18763 to bring competitive robotics opportunities to areas lacking resources, local funding, and technical guidance.
Many international students and parents face barriers such as a lack of awareness about FIRST programs, a low density of local STEM interest, and high shipping costs for materials. IGNITE directly addresses these challenges. By gathering unused parts from teams worldwide and securing corporate sponsorships, we customize and distribute hardware starter kits. We then guide these newly formed teams through a complete, virtual training curriculum and pair them with experienced mentors to ensure their long-term sustainability.
To kickstart the program, our collective teams focused heavily on international community outreach and breaking down technical barriers:
Targeted Outreach: We produced an informational video that reached over 1,000 students, parents, and educators in South Africa. To drive community engagement, we partnered with industry professionals—including Derrick Albert (founder of Robotics Handling Systems), Dr. Callen Fisher (Research Chair at Stellenbosch University), and Bernard Smit (Electrical Engineering Manager at HG Molenaar)—to host 2 live information sessions for over 440 people.
Virtual Classrooms: We designed and hosted a comprehensive series of 20 online lectures introducing students to everything from fundraising and registration to core building concepts and programming a starter bot. These lecture videos drew over 3,000 cumulative views and trained 152 active students.
Practical Assignments & Support: To help students apply their knowledge, we created hands-on assignments such as drafting professional cold emails for team fundraising. Each week, mentors from The Clueless, Texpand, and other international teams hosted live office hours so rookie students could ask questions and connect with the global FIRST community.
Through our initial launch, the IGNITE initiative successfully achieved the following milestones in the 2024-2025 season:
4,000+ individuals introduced to the FIRST Tech Challenge program across South Africa.
$6,000 in sponsorships and international parts donations raised to supply completely free hardware starter kits to rookie teams.
8 new FTC teams founded, organized by regional proximity, and fully established in the South Africa region.
Continuous 1-on-1 mentorship provided weekly for all 8 rookie teams, utilizing dedicated Discord channels to facilitate regular meetings and technical support.
During the 2025-26 season, we expanded the reach of the IGNITE initiative to Asia by founding Team PhilBot26, the very first FTC team in the Philippines.
We sourced, organized, and shipped customized hardware kits across the world to clear the initial equipment barrier, providing the new team with essential tools like quality aluminum frames, wheels, and control hubs. Team Coach Mary Rose Maghuyop noted that opening the component kits felt like discovering a true "treasure trove" for their students and mentors.
With our continuous virtual guidance and technical support, Team PhilBot26 successfully built a functional competitive robot and traveled to compete at the official FIRST Tech Challenge Vietnam Tournament. In their historic rookie season, the team excelled on the international stage, bringing home the prestigious 2nd Place Reach Award.
